Nice occupies the extreme south-east of mainland France, 30 km from the Italian border. This western end of the Riviera is at the mouth of the Paillon. It borders the Mediterranean and the Bay of Angels. A high view of the city would assimilate it to a kind of bowl, in reference to the hills that surround it. Nice is 230 km from Marseille, 216 km from Turin and 200 km from Genoa.
Many historians agree that Nice was an Italian city. To support their thesis, they refer to an event that occurred in 1388: the famous Act of Dediting liberating the city of Provence, for the benefit of the States of Savoy. By inheritance, they acquired Sicily in 1713. Seven years later, it was exchanged for the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. The ensemble was then one of the pre-unitary Italian states, whose capital was Turin. If the Italian unit exists only since 1861, Nice became French in 1860. This chronology completes to falsify the thesis of these historians.
Nice wants to be the economic capital of the Côte d'Azur. Tourism is certainly its spearhead in this sector. In terms of hotel capacity in France, this city comes just behind Paris, which ranks first. It counts every year some 4 million tourists come to walk on the Promenade des Anglais. The city also has two palaces dedicated exclusively to business tourism.
Nice also claims the status of cultural capital of the region. It presents a variety of important cultural facilities: an opera house, a national theater, a conservatory, a regional library and concert halls. Note that the number of its museums is also worth to occupy the second place, still behind Paris.
