Florence Santa Maria Novella station was originally built in 1848 and called the Maria Antonia after the wife of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. In 1932, the city decided to modernise and enlarge the station. A contest was held for the best design which was won by the Gruppo Toscano (Tuscan Group). The design combined a number of architectural influences. The station opened two years later in 1934.
