Historical Antibes

The city of Antipolis was created in the fourth century by Greek colonists from Marseille. The Greek city was at the foot of the rock, as evidenced by traces of occupation discovered around the old cathedral and the castle. In -43, at the time of Augustus, Antipolis was detached from Marseille and became a city of Latin law with various infrastructures, including aqueducts, a theater and an amphitheater. In the 14th century, the Grimaldi family arrived from Genoa and ruled the city with the consent of Pope Clement VII. In the sixteenth century, the army of Charles V invaded the city twice, leading to the construction of Fort Carré. In 1608 the Grimaldi sold the city to Henry VI for 250,000 florins. In 1821, Antibes received the status of Good City for being faithful to Louis XVIII.
