Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport is located just 16 miles north east of Paris with an area of 12.5 square miles. With 69,471,442 passengers going through annually, it ranks as Europe's second-busiest airport and tenth busiest worldwide.
With a rapid growth in air transport and overcapacity of both Orly Airport and Le Bourget Airport, the location for a newly planned airport was placed in the works in 1962. Planning and construction began in 1966 under the name Paris North Airport. On 8 March 1974 the airport opened and was renamed Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG). In 2017, Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport served 69,471,442 passengers.
The airport consists of three separate terminals which are connected by shuttle bus. Terminal 1 was built in a circular shape, reflecting that of an octopus. Terminal 2 is divided into sub-terminals 2A-2G, with terminal 2G accessed by shuttle only. Terminal 2 is also where the TGV-RER trains station is located. Terminal 3 is located 1 km away from Terminal 1 and is a budget terminal that serves both charter and low-cost flights. Car parks are available near all three terminals for parking in Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport.
