Located in the Wallring between the Altstadt and St Georg district is Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, the busiest railway station in Germany. It covers an area of 8,200 square metres and serves, on average, 480,000 passengers a day.
Hamburg Hauptbahnhof first opened in 1906 to replace all the smaller stations that were scattered around the city centre, and to connect their separate railway lines. The station was modelled after the Galerie des Machines from the 1889 World’s Fair and the project was overseen by the German emperor William II. The station was heavily damaged during World War II and was renovated between 1985 and 1991.
Hamburg Hauptbahnhof is a through station with 1-14 platforms. Platforms are located below street level and is accessed by two street-level overbridges opposite of each other. The northern bridge, called the Wandelhall (Promenade Hall), has a small shopping centre, and both bridges include restaurants, shops, toilets, lounges, lockers and information centres. The station serves long-distance and regional trains, as well as the S-bahn and U-bahn trains located on platforms 1,2, 3 and 4. Ground-level parking in Hamburg Hauptbahnhof is located right outside the station and in nearby car parks.
