Amsterdam-Central Station

Amsterdam-Central Station is the biggest train station in Amsterdam and the second-busiest station in the country behind Utrecht Central. It’s operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen, has 15 tracks, and 3 out of the city’s 4 metro lines depart from here.

A brief history of Amsterdam-Central Station

Amsterdam-Central Station opened in 1889 and was designed by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers who also designed the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It features a dramatic façade that emulates a palace and many stone reliefs referencing the city and the country’s importance and power at the time of construction. To make way for the new North-South metro line, the station has been undergoing near continuous reconstruction works since 1997.

Connections at Amsterdam-Central Station

Amsterdam-Central Station has several high-speed, international routes running to England, France, Belgium and Germany. The most frequent service is the Amsterdam-Paris service on Thalys. Many national services also depart from the station. In addition to the metro lines, you also have access to bus and tram services which run all around the city and surrounds. Parking near Amsterdam-Central Station is limited. There is little to no street parking, but there are a few multi-storey car parks close by and several Park + Ride facilities outside the city centre.
