The Citadel is located in the heart of the historic center of Montpellier. It is located between the Lez plain and the fortifications to the east of the old town.
This stronghold was built between 1624 and 1627 by order of Louis XIII. It was erected to facilitate the surveillance of the city inhabited by a large Protestant community. It sheltered the royal troops and the provincial militia of Bas-Languedoc. In 1929 she hosted the 28th Engineer Regiment. When the latter was disbanded in 1939, the Citadel was transformed into a Mobilization Center for Engineering. In 1947, Joffre High School and College moved into the former Joffre Barracks.
Since the installation of Joffre high school and college in the Citadel in 1947, the premises have been transformed for school needs. Thus, the old powder magazine of the bastion of Montmorency was transformed into Olympic swimming pool. Sports fields have been created south of the Citadel. Some remains of the old citadel are preserved, including the bastions of the south and the stronghold of the King.
