The Saint-Clément Aqueduct is located in Montpellier and individual guided tours are available on request.
The construction of the aqueduct Saint-Clément in 1754 responds to the hydrographic problems of Montpellier. The engineer in charge of its realization is Henri Pitot de Launay. Inspired by the Pont du Gard, he built this masterpiece to allow the city to drink water. Thanks to this construction, many fountains could be put in place.
The average slope of the Saint-Clément aqueduct is 28 cm per km. It also has 236 arches on 22 m high and 800 meters long. Between the source located at 9 km and the point of arrival, there is a difference in height of 4 m. To prevent access to the last level, wrought iron railings were placed in 1776 by the Montpellier ironworker Philippe Bongue. Before the construction of this structure, the water was to be drawn from the various wells of the commune.
