Place de la Comédie is located in the heart of the old medieval city, in the center of Montpellier. It is lined with many buildings, including the municipal theater that gave it its name.
The first place was built in 1755. Its history was marked by the fires of the theater in 1785 and 1881. In 1790, the Fountain of the Three Graces by Étienne d'Antoine is installed in this central square of the city. In 1789, the original model of the sculpture integrated the Fabre museum and was replaced by a copy. It sits in the lobby of the Opéra Comédie following renovations in the museum. Before the Second World War, the Grand Café de France and the Museum as well as the Grand Café de Montpellier organized every Tuesday an informal wine market.
Place de la Comédie is surrounded by many brands such as McDonald's, Foot Locker or Quick. It is connected to other places, including the Champ-de-Mars and Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle.
