Housed in the outbuildings of the former Massilian hotel, the Musée Fabre is located at 32, boulevard Bonne Nouvelle, close to Place de la Comédie in Montpellier.
The Musée Fabre was created in 1824, on the idea of Baron François Xavier Fabre. Painter and collector, the latter offered his works to the city of Montpellier to feed the collection of the establishment. Among other personalities who contributed to the founding of the museum is also the mayor of the time Ange Jean-Michel Bonaventure, Marquis de Dax Axat and first president of the Society of Fine Arts of Montpellier. The site was launched in 1825. The official inauguration of the Fabre Museum took place on December 3, 1828. The establishment is now one of the most important provincial museums in France.
In its museum space of 9,200 m², the establishment houses more than 3,500 drawings, 900 engravings and 800 works of art. Find authentic pieces from the Renaissance to the present day. Discover among others the frescoes of Veronese, Ribera, Bourdon, Reynolds or Allori.
