History of Brussels
The name of the city appeared for the first time in the seventh century in a chronicle reporting the death of the bishop of Cambrai. At the end of the Eighty Years' War, the city was dominated by the Protestants, but the Spaniards came to the end of the insurgents. The Catholic counter-reform ensued with the construction of many Baroque churches. Towards the end of the 17th century, Louis XIV invaded the city and bombed its center, sparing only the Gothic town hall.
